Today, we celebrate the optional memorial of Saint Ezekiel Moreno, pastor

Saint Ezekiel Moreno, was an Augustinian friar who labored for many years in the Philippines and in Colombia, South America, as a religious, a priest, and later as bishop.

He was ordained priest in Manila in 1871. He was then sent to his first parochial assignment in Calapan, Oriental Mindoro. There he learned and mastered Tagalog. During his stay in the country, he reached various regions such as Palawan, Negros Occidental, Las PiƱas, Batangas, Manila, and Cavite.

He was later struck by cancer and returned to Spain at the insistence of his priests in order to receive treatment, and died there at Monteagudo on August 19, 1906, at the age of 58.

He was beatified in 1975 and canonized in the Dominican Republic by Pope John Paul II in 1992 at the close of the 5th Century Celebration of the Evangelization of Latin America.

Saint Ezekiel Moreno, was declared by Pope John Paul II, as the patron saint of cancer patients.
