(Social Media Presence of Pope Leo XIV)
He decided to continue the social media presence of the Petrine Seat amidst a new Industrial Revolution.
Pope Leo XIV shall continue to engage the existing 52 million followers of the official Papal account @Pontifex on X (formerly Twitter). Pope Leo XIV got an overwhelming 400 thousand new followers in one day for his new account on Instagra.
The account is called @Pontifex – Pope Leo XIV, the only official account of the Holy Father on the platform. Pope Benedict XVI initiated Papal presence in social media on December 12, 2012, when he launched the @Pontifex Twitter account, which eventually was used by Pope Francis.
Pope Francis opened his official Instagram account, @Franciscus, on March 19, 2016. What made Pope Francis’ presence on social media more notable was his daily content creation of around 50,000 posts that were published across the @Pontifex and @Franciscus accounts.
Thereby, making his short crisp evangelizing messages on peace, love, hope, justice and care for our common home spark widespread if not global interaction. Moreso, during difficult times.
In 2020, at the height of a global pandemia, Pope Francis’s messages were viewed 27 billion times.
